Developmental/ Substantive Edit

“You write to communicate to the hearts and minds of others what’s burning inside you, and we edit to let the fire show through the smoke.” – Arthur Plotnik

This edit is designed to help an author through from a rough manuscript through to a final manuscript ready to be copyedited by improving the organization and content.

There are many elements to this edit including an in depth analysis of character development, thematic elements, plot development and consistency, research of facts, overall organization, and mechanics. The stylistic components of this edit clarify meaning, eliminate jargon, guide suggested language to suit the “voice,” and correct other mechanical line-by-line errors. It clarifies, re-organizes, revises, and cuts a manuscript’s content and structure through suggestion and collaboration with the author. Also known as substantive editing, manuscript editing, content editing, or structural editing.
