Copyedit/Line Edit
“I’ve reached that final moment of editing a book—the one where the text manifests as a living breathing person and starts slugging me in the face. ” – Richard Due
A copyedit concentrates on grammar, spelling, punctuation and other mechanics of style.
Duplications, deletions, typos, punctuation, spacing, and grammar are all analyzed at this level according to the preferred style sheet/manual of style. If a preferred style guide is not requested, The Chicago Manual of Style will be used. Spelling is adapted to the English variation of the author’s choice (British English, American English, etc.), with a focus on internal consistency. Your copyedit also checks for consistency of mechanics and internal consistency of facts (character names, relationships, anachronisms, timelines). EditElle does not offer a seperate line edit service, so there are additional stylistic elements to this edit through the adjustment of the length and structure of sentences and paragraphs with a focus on coherence, flow, voice, and level of formality. EditElle wants to ensure that your manuscript is as clean as possible and meticulously reads each letter, space, and mark of punctuation throughout the body of the story as well as the front and back matter, chapter titles and cover. This is considered to be the last edit before formatting the manuscript.
